The process of sorting out 13,000+ computer files & god knows how many paper files has begun although

only part of this relates to the Flegeltaub Family and their branches. This is not the intended website under

development. The information here simply put up to share with numerous researchers who in recent times

have been houndering :) me for knowledge. This website will be further developed over the next year.

Meanwhile please enjoy the content if it is of interest to you. Take care .. Steve

........................... .......................... what's our story? ........................... ...........................

Still trying to 'factually' answer that question to be honest but here's a little insight ...

Zerah took his family & at least one nephew across Europe to England during the early days of the Crimean War [about 1854], probably to escape a number of things history suggests but a key consideration probably was that he had boys whom from age 12, were by law destined to be called into the Russian army for no less than 25 years of service. Their trip, 'escape' is what two children described their ordeal as, would not have been easy with such a large family and given the politics of the time but they probably landed in Bristol & then headed towards the coal mining towns in the hills of Southern Wales where there was a known Jewish community & Rabbis from Suwalki [today Poland] / Kalvaria [Kalvarija, Lithuania] from where the family were from. Later the family would move north to Liverpool and settle.

In 1864, Zerah & Anne took two children [one of their own & another] to Israel where in 1866 they are listed in the Montefiore census as living in Jerusalem, himself a practising Rabbi [teacher] of Hassid religious conviction. Such faith helps to explain why many of his children took an active role in Jewish affairs after they arrived in Australia. Imagine the scene of most of the children, one as young as eight standing there on the Liverpool docks watching their parents & their youngest sibling sailing away to the Holy land, never to see them again.

And of the children left behind, basically the whole family consisting of sons, daughters, grand children & daughters/sons-in-laws, they would a few years later set sail for Australia [between 1866 & 1869] in search of a new life too where they settled in three provinical towns in Victoria - Pleasant Creek [Stawell], Bendigo & Ballarat. And it should be mentioned that one, actually looks like two of the children headed to the USA. And what of the eight year old that didn't sail with his parents .. well taking a dislike for Australia, he headed back to family in the UK. There is much to tell & in the future I will write a book about this interesting & quite remarkable family story so they are not lost in time.

Got 7 minutes & 53 seconds of spare time, then watch this movie ...

If you have never watched this movie, go buy it ...

It's alot of fun & offers an insight into how Jewish life was in Europe before

the children left for distant lands where many married out of the faith.

Jerusalem & Tel Aviv, Israel - July 2011

Crank up volume - Music sets the mood

Video Production: Storyboard edit cut only. Haven't used all the photos or any film yet.

Video doesn't start or stops? Sorry about that. Read this.

The video is Windows Media format [old tech] as I have a gremlin with Flash [new tech] at the mo.

Patience is the solution :) Just double click & go make a drink (coffee or gin) & come back it try

again. It will at some point run without a hitch as the file downloads into your cache on your

computer. Just takes time. If it stops once you do get it going start it again and it should run without

stopping again. Failing that there is a link at the bottom of page where you can right click & save

to your desktop. Then you will be-good-to-go!

And to the eagle eyes amongst us, 'Zerach' depicted in the movie will be changed to 'Zerah' at a later date.

..................... ................... variances in the spelling of names ................... .....................

This is a complex subject for many reasons which goes beyond how their names were correctly or not correctly recorded by the record keepers. I am advised by powers more knowledgeable than me on such matters that the Hebrew language has, let's say, undergone a refined change over the last 200 years [sounds familiar about most languages really but refined?] and because of this, what was deemed the correct or more likely translation of Yiddish into English in 1850 is obviously not applicable to the teachings & use of today's translation methods. This is why names appear in numerous forms over time & depending on time, you could argue that you should adopt the closest spelling for that period according to the rules that existed then. However that is messy. What also should be known is that within Jewish circles, even though change as suggested above has happened, if you stay within the Jewish system for lack of a better term, then the name was Zerah or Zarah whereas if a need to translate it into english, then the 'c' pops up. The same it would seem was true in translation into other languages such as Polish or Russian. So the differences [in first or surnames] can be explained but the debate on what to call 'Zorach' as has been embedded in my brain for years requires change in my opinion. Taking a leaf from the Jewish link, and having asked a number of scholars on this subject, his name was 'Zerah Fligeltaub'. Additional to this I note that I as a general rule of thumb log family member names on the trees as per their original birth records. Then along the way there are reasons to maybe change one or two according to one valid event or another. However if people changed their name post their birth, like Joel Flegeltaub did to Joel Ford, then he is listed of course as Flegeltaub, not Ford. There is no absolute rule to all of this. Just careful research followed up by sound logic. We won't all agree.

........................... ........................... what's in a name ........................... ...........................

Flegeltaub, Fligeltaub, Fliegieltaub, Flegieltaub, Fligelstone, Fliegel, Flegeltobe, Flegg, Fleggson, Flohm are some that link ..

Ford, Vale, Rodd, Vaegan, Stone, Wing, Braun, Brown, Youdelev, .. These all link too - 1st generation & not by marriage ......

It researching Jews, do not apply an Anglo Saxon mentality to your logic. Otherwise you will find little for time spent!

To make a point, a Jew from Poland living in London could have three names .. one being his Jewish name; second one his Polish name which I accept he had little use for in London and then thirdly his anglized adopted English name. When you add some got in trouble with the law, many went bankrupt and then changed their names again. Then there were nicknames & then the record keeping [depending on the time in history you are researching] was either non-existant, badly done or thanks to Hitler & his mob, we lost it.

Thankfully only a few lead such a colourful life that necessatated name changes but if these people represent the hole in the tree, then I equate the frustration I and other researchers have like this .. You have just spent all weekend, no all week, no all month doing a 5,000 piece jigsaw puzzle only to find in the end you are missing 10 pieces. Sorry but there will be no framing of that picture to hang on the wall with glory for now, possibly ever. Given the effort, the holes annoy you.

So they had three names, some could become five or six [in records I am suggesting albeit all slight variations] but I was only talking about the first names. Time to add the surnames and you soon see that the 80/20 rule will apply ... 80% of your effort will be in trying to find 20% of the family and when Simeon becomes Cohen, or Moses becomes Beddington or Walford, or even Russell, then I hope you like effort.

Moving on and turn a long story, short, Napoleon in a decree of July 20, 1808 insisted upon the Jews adopting fixed names albeit his decree covered only the lands west of the Rhine. However many other parts of Germany required surname-adoption within a few years although such laws were not immediately taken seriously by the Jews with some adopting surnames many years later. By 1812 Napoleon had occupied most of Prussia which includes part of the Suwalki region. So picking a name was like a lottery you got to win, well if you didn't have one, then offcials in parts of Europe simply gave you one. So what of Flegeltaub? First and foremost, it is a unqiue name.

Flegeltaub can be translated as Wings of a Dove

For years now I have suggested to some family members that we were chicken farmers or budgie breeders. But alias, I was joking. We were in fact duvet manufacturers. Stop it. Jokes aside the term 'Wings of a Dove' has biblical connections and there are various books by numerous Jewish authors who have used this title for books they have written and as you may have guessed, there was a man known as Rabbi Fligeltaub who is listed as the author of a book called "Wings of the Dove". Howzat? Does this link to us? I believe quite possibly.

And there is other treasure to be found, well that's if I can find the people who have it but I can not give away all my secrets in one night so the rest as they say will have to wait. One last thing relating to 'names' and that is it is my 25 years experience in tracking this surname that convinces me that most people who have a varient of the name are related. Of course I can not prove this and few share my beliefs but thanks to Hitler and his mob we lost valuable records that may have given me the 'absolute' proof to prove this. My research on this is extensive and I have some clues that when coupled with other clues do point strongly to what I say. So with respect but making the point anyway, to my fellow researchers who have a problem that their surname was spelt with an 'i' instead of an 'e' or 'taub' became 'tobe', please keep an open mind. The biggest mistake people make in researching is that they put too much belief in what Aunt Mary said or that what records exist is it or what they say is gospel. I strongly campaign that all [most then] Flegeltaub family regardless of spelling variances in an area in the form of a triangle from Suwalki / Sejny in Poland to Vilnius in Lithuania over to Klaipeda, also in Lithuania are related!
